Question of the Elder gods
Something that's strange that appears in the Lovecraft universe are the presence of Elder gods. While later authors would write them as "The good guys" fighting eldritch horrors, Lovecraft himself doesn't denote these gods in such a way. On the contrary, the thinking and actions of Outer gods and Great Old Ones are so far beyond our concept that we can't understand them. Nodens, Hypnos, Bast, gods of different pantheons that have little to do with cosmic horrors. Lovecraft did take a lot of inspiration from other religions but we don't know why. Perhaps it is part of a life unfinished. For my part, I like to think that these gods were a way if reining back his own pantheon for his reader's sake. It is possible he thought that making the gods more relatable might strengthen his own writing. The gods you know are easier than the new ones.
