Gloom Review

Im still feeling wonky, so I decided to play some games. Am I the only one who knows about "Gloom?" It's a simple rogue game having you fight random monsters and boss encounters. Like most rogues you lose everything after you die. You are trapped in an endless dream of shadows and silhouettes. And boy, is this game not fun.

I'll be honest, I usually despise rogues and this game is one of the reasons. Cheap shots often take me down and to lose all progress is heartbreaking to the point of numbness. You'd think the worst would be the big monsters but no, there's this jerk of a villain who lobs fire bombs at me. Easy to dodge but the flames stick around allowing other enemies to trap you. Then there's the priests who fire fireballs at predictable but annoying intervals. Follow it up with the dogs and scythe users that jump on you and you've got a mixture of traps that frustrates me.

If it was more souls like I'd be able to progress a bit or if this was a more fun game I'd be able to endure. But it's not fun enough and it's not worth my time. I know I'm supposed to try over and over but I'm just not motivated by the story or the graphics. What do I care if this guy lives in a dream forever? You fight over and over to end up in the same world after you die. The people you meet at the start run out of things to say fast. Soon you'll endure the same lines of dialogue until your eyes bleed. 

I've only seen one video of this game online so it's an obscure work, which is usually a plus for me. This game will probably sit in my dustbin forever. If there's a positive I can say that the lore from the items you collect is interesting. Each dagger and upgrade has a paragraph attached to it. The other positive is the implied lore of your character trapped in a coma, which explains the dreams. But those are miniscule compared to the core of the game. 

Overall, mediocre. I know it was made by one guy and I shouldn't be too mean but this game put me in a bad mood. Maybe I'll come back one day. Maybe not.
