Issues with Oblivion
I've been playing Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered for about two weeks and I love it. Maybe love is too strong a word. It still has the jank the original had but with better graphics. The jank is part of the charm but would it hurt to update the code to prevent bigger issues? My biggest issue comes from the titular Oblivion levels. These are gateways to the hellish Oblivion realm thst pop up randomly in the game's world. Let me break it down.
That's the first problem: Location. No matter where you go you will likely find these gates. The issue stems from having to drop what your doing and explore the gate. You aren't forced to stop but if you don't the gate will remain open until you enter and find a way to close it. That task is simple but the map is the problem. The in game map shows you what places you've discovered but not which gates you've closed. Now that I think about it, this is the issue for all areas on the map, it won't tell you what places you've visited and finished. If you walk pass a place and don't explore it, you'll have to guess where on the map you haven't explored yet. That means every place you miss just adds to the confusion.
Second issue: Oblivion sucks. He'll is an ugly black and red nighare. You explore islands above the lava and look through towers to find a way to close the gate. Findings the sigil stone to close the gate is easy but the world is boring. Filled with the same monsters and levels and confusing mazes underground. Each level repeats almost the same, you'd think someone would take ideas from Dante's Inferno and jazz up the designs. Instead you trek through places you can't tell apart.
Problem three: The Lore. The game goes out of its way to tell you the monsters you fight aren't demons. In fact, the demon gods that live in Oblivion are more helpful than the nine divine that created your world. The game says they see our world as a curiosity. If that's true, why am I fighting them? Its a conundrum for the lore lovers to figure out but it's hard to accept that these demon-looking npcs aren't interested in killing all of the world. Especially if the they attack on site. It's akin to saying "these aren't the bad guys" while they're attacking you.
So why does it keep playing? Because despite the flaws, this is a fun game and i love it.
