Reversing of the gods
If you observe history you can see the evolution of religion. Ancient paganism religions assigned an element to a god like the god of fire, water, and so on. Man was seperate from the gods, they lived in their own realm and interacted with man at a basic level. That changed with Christianity. Now, god interacted with man. God became a line to humanity to lift him up. Today, we still have gods. Internet god, money god, drug god. The temples may have changed but we still worship. Going back a hundred years to Lovecraft, we see a reversal of the evolution. God does not want to know man or be known. God cannot be understood by our mortal minds. It is an opposing view of the way religion was following. In Lovecraft's day, new science were being discovered like electricity and basic chemistry. Despite these understandings, Lovecraft seems to look at the futility of such discoveries. We see a pantheon that science bows to. A pantheon that does not make sense by our own understanding. In fact, science seems to seperate us from god, Lovecraft says that our efforts won't matter because we are aren't seeing the bigger picture. We're insignificant to these gods.
