Tooth Story Idea
I've been looking at my tooth story wrong. I thought I had to take it serious but maybe horror comedy is the way to go. Stephen King has this "comedic" short story about a guy who bashes in women's heads with a hammer after realizing they aren't the love of his life. Titled "The Man who Loved Flowers" follows a nameless man searching for his love "Norma." We have this setup where the narrator passes by a radio while picking up flowers for Norma. He overhears how a woman's body was found in a river bashed to pieces. The man ignores the radio and goes off to find his love. So infatuated is he that the other vendors join in on the joy. One of the bakers offers his ring but the man declines it. It's all this build up of being in love with someone. This mushy feeling that is portrayed so well in the short story. It ends with the man meeting a woman he thinks is Norma and killing her when she reveals she isn't. It turns out that the real Norma died a while back and this is what drove the man to insanity. It's the sudden twist, this turn around that give the story it's punch. Even if you see it coming the story is told well enough that you follow along. As the man leaves, an older couple pass by and see the man with radiance that exudes off of him. I think the woman asks her husband, "Why don't you look at me like that any more?"
So this comedic ending is what I'm aiming for. I can see how King seems to be enjoying himself while writing it. I should do the same. Instead of trying to focus on the seriousness of my story, I need to embrace the funny ending I found while writing it. I think this might help.
