The death of the great unification

PC and Console games have stood at opposite sides of each other. PC has boasted it's high graphics and speed while consoles boast about their affordability and quality games. These two games have almost stood as different genres from each other despite being the same category. Ports to each other are seen as a peace offering between the two sides. Both benefit from the sales. But as time has gone on, Console has rapidly caught up to PC in terms of graphics and speed. In fact, their positions have reversed with more PC games becoming lower quality in terms of graphics. It's also become a hassel for Console to port to PC. The PC generation almost died if not for Steam and the flood of indie games. But both sides have wanted a type of eventual unification. A way for the two sides to come together. But Sony's recent declaration has defeated all of that. They've stated that all the Single Player games will stay on their console while multiplayer will come to PC. For me, this is good news and bad news. I grew up with owning only one type at a time and I know that it's difficult to pick sides. But the benefit is the competition between all of them that pushes the industry forward. On the other hand, having a library of old games to play would be nice as well. You can't play or buy the old Spiderman games from the PS1 era for instance, or the PS3. But you can grab the Insomniac developed Spiderman game from 2018 on PC. Steam and GOG act like libraries of old games. Lots of stuff appears on there and is lost in the dust. This isn't all bad, many of these games are "my first project" type that need to be used as stepping stones for their developers to grow. But they add to the fluff that players have to get through to find the good stuff. It's also understandable why older games aren't listed on newer platforms, the developers want you to spend money on their newer games and maintaing the older games takes too much money. That's why there's the debate on piracy and ROMs. But with Sony's actions there will likely be no unification for a long time to come. The PS6 will come out and lock all it's games to itself. This is bad for the great library of games as it's like locking away books for a certain generation.
