Character Trouble: Verity
I'm having trouble with my latest ghoul. The biggest divide between ghouls in my story is how they see their canibalist nature. That splits into categories of those that embrace their nature or reject it. The rules for ghouls are a little vague but it seems that a human might become a ghoul through a ritual. There are instances of humans and ghouls worshipping together in the Lovecraft stories. What they aim to achieve is unknown. To further complicate the matter, Lovecraft's fake family trees includes Yogash the Ghoul who is the grandson of Cthulhu. So it seems that the evolutionary line traveling down to humanity is filled monsters and gods.
So let's talk about my character, Verity. She was cursed by a green talisman her father found and suddenly became what is called an albino ghoul. The idea was based off of Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis." This sudden transformation leads to Verity's banishment and poor treatment by both humans and ghouls. Here's the twist, Verity is considered beautiful to the extent that she is horrifyingly beautiful. I'm trying to add in this idea of horrifying beauty. This concept comes from the works of HR Giger of the "Alien" fame. It's the same way albino creatures in nature are considered beautiful. The issue, in reality, is that albinos are caused by issues with genes, usually by inbreeding.
For Verity to survive, she goes inward, like going into an egg or fetal position. I got those idea from Hermann Hesse who wrote "The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world." Verity comes to the conclusion that she isn't the monster that was rejected by two societies but a goddess. She is transforming the way a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Rejection and she can do terrible things to people's minds. It's this idea of evolving past your limitations. The rejected stone has become the capstone, in other words.
And here I am combining Hesse, HR Giger, Kafka, albinism, metamorphosis, and transformation into percoeved godhood. Its all over the place that it's hard to find a defined theme for the character. And I have to add in the importance of the talismans because I don't know what they do. Maybe I should drop the cursed talisman aspect but then how would I explain the sudden transformation? Not to mention the idea of where she stands on consuming human flesh. Decisions, decisions.
